2010 Fortune 100 List Of Companies And Their Current Twitter Status

What a difference 2 years makes! We did our first Fortune 100 list of companies and their current Twitter status back in 2008. (Fortune 100 List Of Companies And Their Current Twitter Status) This year’s list of companies have made some great strides when it comes to their Twitter participation. The one that stands out the most happens to be at the top of the list. Walmart had no Twitter status back in 2008 and now it gets our highest grade for 2010.

These Fortune 100 companies did so well this year we decided to give each company a grade to see what Twitter status performed better than others.

Here is the list of items we took into consideration for the grades we gave out this year?

1. The Google search test with the company name and twitter used as the keywords.

2. Active Twitter page with more than 1000 followers.

3. Multiple active Twitter pages with more than 1000 followers.

4. Strong Customer Service points of contact on Twitter page.

5. Twitter pages with multiple Customer Service points of contact.

6. Active link from corporate website or blog to Twitter page.

7. Active link from Twitter page to corporate site or blog.

8. Highly visible Twitter page link or logo on corporate site or blog.

9. Branded custom Twitter page background

10. Custom branded corporate website dedicated to Twitter and Twitter followers.

11. Twitter Verified Account Status (*)

This is going to be the first of a series of posts that will break down and review the reason why we gave each Fortune 100 company their respective grade.
We will look to review the grades of 5 Fortune 100 companies per week until we get through the entire list.

When you think of Quicken, most immediately think of the best selling bookkeeping software by Intuit. When I did the research for my blog post Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For I mistakenly assumed that Quicken Loans was a part of Intuit. I was then notified by Kelly LaVaute, Senior Copywriter and manage all of their social media that Quicken Loans was a totally separate company from Intuit. The story of how Quicken Loans became the number one online mortgage broker is quite a marvel especially with how much of a crisis the mortgage industry is in right now.

Matt Cardwell, the Director of Web Marketing (@thefitnessnerd) made mention that the company was bought back from Intuit by Dan Gilbert the original founded in July 2002. Gilbert led a small group of investors in purchasing the company back from Intuit, retaining the Quicken Loans name in perpetuity. The company has been privately held since that time.

Customer Service
Quicken Loans prides itself on customer service and has used Twitter as an intricate part of how to communicate with their prospects and customers. Kelly@ Quicken Loans @quickenloans can answer a wide variety of questions regarding mortgages as well as a great fish and chip place to eat in Detroit. Here are a few of her most recent Tweets.

Customer Feedback
Qwicken Loans just recently lunched another Twitter account specifically to get user and customer feedback. Cora @feedbackcentral is in charge of organizing live user feedback sessions. Users can share their feedback and get to see results of their suggestions on the quickenloansfeedbackcentral.com site and on Twitter. Check out some of the Tweets from @feedbackcentral

Education
Quicken Loans is very conscious of the current state of the economy and looks to help in educating their customers on how to prepare themselves for managing a mortgage. They have setup the Quizzle.com website and @quizzle in order to assist the home buyer and seller with an array of financial tools. These tools include a home value report, a mortgage evaluator, a budgeting tool and a free credit report.

Customer Satisfaction
Quicken Loans has also created a Youtube Channel to capture the unscripted videos of their many satisfied customer experiences with Quicken Loans. Here is one of my favorites.

Bottom Line
Quicken Loans has truly embraced social media and gained a real presence on Twitter. Both Kelly and Matt agree that the key to being successful in communicating through these new forms of social marketing is having the support of their company when uncharted issues-both good and bad-arise. In fact, this Quicken Loans team charged with innovatively building customer relationships is in the unique, empowered position to use social media to with little interference from its legal department. Kelly, Matt, Cora and the rest of the Quicken Loans social media crew are entrusted to be the voice of the company, working in tandem with one common company goal: “Making sure with every client, every time, they deliver on the promise to make it the best mortgage experience ever”.

FORTUNE 100 Best Companies To Work For And Their Twitter Status

I was very disappointed with this list. I would have thought that more of these companies would have by now had a Twitter presence, but I was sadly mistaken.

Only 25 of the 100 companies had a Twitter status. I was most impressed with Zappos (@zappos) with over 90K+ followers and I was least impressed with Stew Leonard’s @stewleonards at only having 5 followers. Stew Leonard’s should really take a look at what Whole Foods (@wholefoods) is doing on Twitter.

Three companies that I feel are really missing the boat on not being on Twitter are eBay, Fedex and T-mobile. All of these companies should follow Comcast (@comcastcares) for its great customer service via Twitter.

Of all the 100 companies listed I would definitely consider working for Zappos. Not only have they taken their Twitter status to the next level with http://twitter.zappos.com/ but they really get what most of us are looking for in a laid back and fun working environment.

It is amazing to me that in this day and age of Web 2.0 technology and Social Media there are still some major corporations that have not embraced the Twarketing boom that is occurring right now. Some of the companies that have currently impressed me the most on Twitter are not even part of the Fortune 100.

Whole Foods, Jet Blue, Woot, SouthWest Airlines and Zappos are taking advantage of Twitter’s market potential. Most of the Fortune 500 are missing the boat on this one and I just want to let it be known who they are and ask my readers to help me catalog those that I have missed.
